Ronald “Ron” Barry Doan, 76, of Mountainair, NM, passed away Sunday, May 21, 2017 at his home after a long illness.
Ron was born August 19, 1940, in Abilene, TX, to HC “Johnnie” and Charlcie Tyson Doan. After living in various places because of his father’s work, the family, including Ron’s younger brother, Jerry, moved to El Paso, TX. Ron played baseball and basketball while attending Austin High School where he graduated in 1958. He attended Texas Western College where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and played on the golf team.
Ron married his bride, Dianne Irvin, on June 15, 1966 in El Paso.
After assistant golf professional positions at several golf courses, Ron served as the Head Golf Professional at Scott Park Golf Course in Silver City, NM, for 20 years from 1965 to 1985. He became a member of the PGA of America in 1969 and was a founding member of the Sun Country PGA Section in 1974. Ron was also the golf coach at Western New Mexico University in Silver City.
In 1985, Ron and Dianne moved to Roswell, NM, where Ron became the Head Golf Professional at Spring River Golf Course and worked there until he retired in 2000. Ron won many awards from the Sun Country PGA including Golf Professional of the Year (1994), Teacher of the Year (1995 and 1996), the Bill Strausbaugh Award (2004) and the Lifetime Achievement Award (2005).
Ron was an amazing golf teacher and mentor. Many of his students went on to play college and professional golf, and several of his assistant golf professionals went on to head positions of their own. Ron used golf as a vehicle to bring people together and enhance their lives.
Ron and Dianne retired to San Patricio, NM, in 2000. They spent their time hosting groups for lessons in golf and art and they became part of the close-knit community. In 2008 they moved to Mountainair, NM.
Special thanks to Ron’s caregivers during his long illness: Dr. Jill Marjama-Lyons, Susan Banks CNP, and Rick Townson. Although they started as his caregivers, they all became good friends.
Ron’s wish was to be remembered as a loving husband and father, and to thank his wife Dianne, who became his caregiver as the disease progressed, taking care of him with love and compassion. Those that knew Ron will most miss his fearless creativity, quiet smiles, steely stares, selfless dedication and generosity as a professional, friend, grandfather, father and husband.
Ron is survived by his wife, Dianne Irvin Doan, his sons, Cameron Doan and his wife Kelly of Dallas, TX, and Brandon Doan and his wife Tammy of Buford, GA; his grandchildren, Lexi, Ethan, Charlsie, Tristan and Addisyn; and his brother, Jerry Doan and his wife Cheryl, of Tempe, AZ, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, HC “Johnnie” Doan in 2001 and Charlcie Tyson Doan in 2008.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30pm on Friday, May 26, 2017 at Mountainair United Methodist Church, 211 S. Sunset, Mountainair, NM 87036, with Reverend Robert Hunt officiating.
